What it is

What are neuro infections?

Neuro infections are infections of the nervous system caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Meningitis affects the coverings of the brain, and encephalitis affects the brain itself.

In India, tuberculosis of the brain (TB meningitis) and neurocysticercosis (tapeworm cysts in the brain, a common cause of fits) are also important causes. Some infections need treatment for many months.

Common types of neuro infection

  • Meningitis

Infection of the coverings of the brain. Fever with severe headache and a stiff neck needs urgent care.

  • Encephalitis

Infection of the brain itself, often by viruses. It can cause confusion, behaviour change or fits.

  • Neurocysticercosis

Tapeworm cysts in the brain, often from contaminated food or water. A common cause of fits; it can be treated.

  • TB of the brain

Tuberculosis affecting the brain and its coverings. Treatment usually lasts many months.
