What it is
What is neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It usually affects the longest nerves first, so symptoms often start in the toes and feet and slowly move upwards.
Diabetes is the most common cause in India. Other causes include low vitamin B12, alcohol, thyroid problems, some medicines and conditions where the immune system attacks the nerves. Nerve pressure, such as carpal tunnel syndrome at the wrist, is also common.
Common types of neuropathy
-
Diabetic neuropathy
The most common type in India. Numbness, tingling or burning usually starts in the toes and feet.
-
B12-deficiency neuropathy
Low vitamin B12 can damage the nerves. If B12 is low, supplements help.
-
Immune neuropathy (GBS, CIDP)
The immune system attacks the nerves. Weakness rising quickly from the legs is an emergency.
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Pressure on a nerve at the wrist causes numbness in the fingers, often at night.

FAQ
Questions about neuropathy
It depends on the cause and how long it has been present. Treating the cause early gives the best chance of improvement and helps prevent it from getting worse.
No. Diabetes is common, but low B12, alcohol, thyroid problems, medicines and immune conditions can also cause neuropathy.
NCS measures how fast nerves carry signals using small electrical pulses. It may feel like a mild tap or tingle and is generally well tolerated.
Nerve pain is often felt more at rest and at night. Nerve pain medicines can help sleep.
If a vitamin such as B12 is low, supplements help. Taking vitamins without a deficiency usually does not help.
