What to bring and how to prepare.
3 questions
Bring old reports, MRI or CT films, a list of your current medicines and any questions you want to ask. For fits or unusual movements, a phone video of the episode is very helpful.
Yes, if possible. A family member who has seen the symptoms — such as a fit, confusion or memory problems — can describe what happened, which helps the diagnosis.
No. Take your medicines as usual unless a doctor has told you otherwise, and bring the list or the strips with you.
About neurology
When to see a neurologist and what to expect.
3 questions
A neurologist diagnoses and treats conditions of the brain, spine, nerves and muscles mainly with medicines, rehabilitation and lifestyle advice. A neurosurgeon performs operations. If surgery may help, a neurologist refers you to a neurosurgeon.
See a neurologist if headaches are frequent, getting worse, wake you from sleep, or come with weakness, numbness, vision changes or vomiting. A sudden, very severe headache — the worst of your life — needs emergency care straight away.
Not always. Many conditions are diagnosed from a careful history and examination. Dr. Mehta advises only the tests that help find the cause, and explains why each one is needed.
Children
Child neurology for babies, children and teenagers.
2 questions
Yes. Dr. Mehta holds an MD in Paediatrics and a DrNB in Neurology, and sees both children and adults — for example fits or fever fits, delayed milestones, headaches and unusual movements.
Most children with fever fits do not go on to have epilepsy. A child should still be checked by a doctor after a first fit.
Emergencies
When not to wait for an appointment.
2 questions
No. Sudden face drooping, arm or leg weakness, or slurred speech is an emergency. Go to the nearest hospital emergency immediately. Appointments are for follow-up care and rehabilitation after a stroke.
Stay calm, note the time, move hard objects away, cushion the head and turn the person on their side once the jerking stops. Do not put anything in the mouth. If the fit lasts more than 5 minutes, or one fit follows another, go to the nearest hospital.
