Causes and risk factors
Why it happens
Every person has a limit, or threshold. Risk factors decide how close you already are; triggers add up on top. When the total crosses the limit, an attack can start — which is why one trigger alone may not cause a migraine every time.
Common triggers
- Lack of sleep
- Missed meals
- Stress
- Bright light or screens
- Strong smells
- Some foods
- Travel
How it is diagnosed
Finding the cause
Tests are not needed for every headache. Dr. Mehta advises a scan or other tests only when the history or examination suggests another cause.
