What it is
What is dementia?
Dementia is a group of conditions in which memory, thinking and behaviour slowly decline, enough to affect daily life. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type. Others include vascular dementia (after strokes) and Lewy body dementia.
Not all memory loss is dementia. Low vitamin B12, thyroid problems, depression, poor sleep and some medicines can also affect memory, and these can often be treated.
Common types and causes of memory loss
-
Alzheimer's disease
The most common type. Memory for recent events is often affected first, and changes come on slowly.
-
Vascular dementia
Linked to strokes or blood vessel changes in the brain.
-
Lewy body dementia
A less common type. Memory, thinking and alertness can vary, and movement may also be affected.
-
Treatable causes
Low B12, thyroid problems, depression, poor sleep or some medicines can affect memory, and can often be treated.
