Care

What it is

What is depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad for a few days. It is a lasting low mood or loss of interest that affects sleep, appetite, energy, concentration and daily life for two weeks or more.

The brain and mind are closely linked. Depression and anxiety are more common in people with stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson's, migraine, MS and long-term pain, and treating them often improves overall recovery. Dr. Mehta works with psychiatrists and counsellors when specialist care is needed.

Common kinds of low mood

  • Depression

A lasting low mood or loss of interest for two weeks or more, affecting sleep, energy and daily life.

  • Anxiety with low mood

Worry, restlessness and tension often come together with low mood, and both can be treated.

  • Low mood after stroke or illness

Common after stroke, with epilepsy or Parkinson’s, or with long-term pain. Treating it often helps recovery.

  • Hormonal or postnatal low mood

Hormonal changes, such as after childbirth, and thyroid problems can affect mood. Checking for them is part of care.
