What it is

What is neuro-immunology?

Neuro-immunology deals with conditions where the immune system, which normally protects the body, attacks parts of the nervous system by mistake.

These include multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica (NMOSD), myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), CIDP and autoimmune encephalitis. Many of them come in attacks or relapses and need long-term follow-up.

Common neuro-immune conditions

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Patches of inflammation in the brain and spinal cord, often in young adults, usually coming in relapses.

  • NMOSD

Mainly affects the optic nerves and spinal cord, causing vision loss or weakness in attacks.

  • Myasthenia gravis

Weakness that gets worse with use and through the day, often with drooping eyelids or double vision.

  • Autoimmune encephalitis

The immune system affects the brain, causing sudden behaviour or memory changes or fits. Needs urgent care.

Common symptoms

Causes and risk factors

Why it happens

Knowing the cause helps choose the right treatment and lower the chance of it happening again.

  • The immune system attacking the nervous system by mistake
  • Infections that sometimes trigger the attack (for example in GBS)
  • Genetic and environmental factors
  • In many people no single clear trigger is found

How it is diagnosed

Finding the cause

Dr. Mehta explains each test and what it is looking for before it is done.

Bring to your first visit

It helps Dr. Mehta find the cause faster

  • Previous reports, scans and prescriptions
  • A list of the medicines you take now
  • A phone video of the symptoms, if possible
  • A family member who has seen the symptoms
  1. History and examination

Diagnosis depends on a careful history and examination, supported by tests that look for inflammation and specific antibodies.

  2. MRI brain and spine

    Looks for areas of inflammation.

  3. Antibody tests

Blood or spinal fluid tests for specific conditions.

  4. Nerve tests

NCS / EMG and other tests when needed.

How it is treated

Treatment and follow-up

Treatment is planned for each person and reviewed at every visit — step by step, with each option explained clearly.

  1. Step 01

    Treating attacks

Steroids, IVIG or plasma exchange may be used to calm a sudden attack.

  2. Step 02

    Long-term treatment

Disease-modifying or immune-suppressing medicines may reduce the number of attacks.

every follow-up

  1. Step 03

    Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy and other therapies help recovery after an attack.

  2. Step 04

    Monitoring

Regular follow-up and tests check how well treatment is working and watch for side effects.

Never stop or change medicines on your own — ask Dr. Mehta first.
