What it is
What are spine disorders?
The spine protects the spinal cord and the nerves that go to the arms and legs. Wear and tear of the spine (spondylosis), a slipped or bulging disc, or narrowing of the spinal canal can press on these nerves.
Pressure on a nerve in the neck can cause pain or numbness in the arm (cervical radiculopathy). In the lower back it can cause pain going down the leg (sciatica). Pressure on the spinal cord itself can cause weakness, stiffness or bladder problems.
Common spine problems
-
Cervical spondylosis (neck)
Wear and tear in the neck. Can cause neck pain spreading into the arm, with numbness in the hand.
-
Slipped disc / sciatica
A bulging disc in the lower back presses a nerve, causing pain down the leg.
-
Spinal canal stenosis
Narrowing of the spinal canal squeezes the nerves, causing leg pain, numbness or difficulty walking.
-
Spinal cord compression
Pressure on the spinal cord can cause weakness, stiffness, unsteady walking or bladder problems.
